Why spontaneous and seemingly dumb ideas are sometimes good ideas (in which I make a freakin' sweet hat)
Ok, last post today, promise. Actually, it's officially tomorrow now. Hooray! I think my best ideas come at this time of night, though they are often rather muddled. I was just about to go to bed when I spied this top lying on my stuff-that-must-be-taken-to-the-op-shop-but-I-haven't-got-round-to-it-yet pile. I enjoy the classic colour combo.
I bought it about 4 years ago from an op-shop in a small town where we lunched one day on the way back from the west coast via Lewis Pass. I forget what we ate, but we sat beside the river, swatting away sandflies (this is not an actual memory, but I assume, given that the air is always full of mouthfuls of sandflies and mosquitoes on the west coast, that they were present on this occasion). Afterwards, we girls ventured into town to check out the promising looking op-shop we had spied on the way in. Unfortunately, the impatient let's-get-back-on-the-roaders of the family only allowed us about ten minutes of browsing (hardly enough in a decent op-shop, let us be honest!), in which I hurriedly came to purchase this top and seemingly not much else of interest. That story really has no point to it, so I will continue with my present tale...
The unfortunate thing about the chunky knitted t-shirt vest in question, and the reason I have NEVER worn it, is that there is a slight puffiness in the sleeves, which makes me look like a line-backer. It occurred to me half an hour ago that I might remove these sleeves to make it more wearable.
Brilliant idea! But then, what to do with the sleeves? They are the approximate size and shape of a hat, so let's make a hat. This thought sent me scrambling through draws to find some wool and a needle large enough to hold wool. I am very sure I didn't use the correct wool-stitching technique, whatever that is (sorry Nana), but my pretty hat seems to be holding together and it has these cute little peaky bits on the sides.
The vest is pretty ok too. But the hat, I love. Sewing with wool is amazingly satisfying, by the way. It feels so robust and wholesome, not unlike the experience of eating a huge vege-packed sandwich on grainy bread. Chunky.
Success! And just in time for winter too. And I can wear my old/new vest without looking like I'm about to go and play some American football. Win/win. Now I think it's time for bed, given that I am starting to compare knitting to sandwiches.
Sweet dreams x
